Cultural exchanges
Creativity in the Field
Thomas Julienne collaborated with DJ Click on several projects commissioned by RFI International, including the albums Science Fiction, Sudan, and Laos in 2025, following a field recording journey in November 2024.
These works, produced by DJ Click, are the result of musical cross-pollination, fusing diverse cultural influences. Thomas Julienne’s contribution as co-composer and arranger enriched these albums, bringing depth and sonic diversity that reflect his musical eclecticism.
Album Project: Laos — A Dialogue Between Tradition and Modernity
The Laos album, produced by RFI International and directed artistically by DJ Click, offers a musical and cultural immersion into traditional Laotian sounds, enhanced by contemporary arrangements.
Thomas Julienne plays a central role, blending acoustic tones and modern textures to reinterpret this musical heritage.
The project draws on ethnomusicological field recordings throughout Laos, from Buddhist prayers sung by monks in Vientiane to performances by virtuoso musicians playing the khaen, the vièle, or traditional percussion instruments.
Thomas Julienne also collaborated with singer Amélie Bouchaleune to create a new piece exploring roots and family, and with Wongpakaï, a figure of Laotian blues, capturing the authenticity of Molan.
With a transdisciplinary approach, the initiative includes contributions from filmmaker Laurent Wallon. A music video is currently in the making with contemporary Laotian dancer Noutnapha Soydala.
This project extends beyond the album itself: it aims to become an artistic bridge between France and Laos through an immersive stage performance, celebrating cultural exchange.
